When studying Drama not only do we want to deepen student’s understanding of a particular text or script, but we believe in developing student’s personal learning and thinking skills. Confidence and the ability to speak in a room of others is a life skill which can be nurtured from Year 7 drama lessons throughout their school experience. We want students not only to be able to comprehend the playwright’s work, but to adapt it and work off script, thinking as a writer, director and actor.
In Year 7 and 8, cross curricular links are made whereby students practically explore the novels and poems studied in English lessons. We work together on texts such as The Terrible Fate of Humpty Dumpty, Darkwood Manor and Silent Movies.
Campion is lucky enough to have its own black box drama studio with lighting and recording equipment therefore we offer Drama as an option for GCSE. We follow the OCR, where students have the opportunity to explore practitioners and styles such as Stanislavski, Frantic Assembly and DV8. They will be exposed to physical theatre workshops and theatre trips in order to influence their own works. They will be asked to devise a group piece based on a stimulus, adapt and rehearse a script for an audience, and study in detail Blood Brothers by Willy Russell. The final element sees the students write their opinions toward a live theatre production seen at the theatre and studied in detail.
